Choosing the right location is essential, as coffee trees depend on suitable altitude, climate, and soil conditions for long-term productivity. Arabica coffee thrives at higher elevations where cooler and stable temperatures allow beans to develop slowly, resulting in improved quality. Ideal soils should be well-drained, deep, fertile, loamy or volcanic, and slightly acidic. Swampy, rocky, or compacted soils should be avoided, and farms should be protected from strong winds and excessive heat through the use of shade trees and windbreaks.

Land preparation involves clearing competing vegetation while preserving beneficial shade trees and implementing soil conservation measures, especially on sloping land. Proper planting is equally important: prepare a sufficiently deep and wide hole, mix topsoil with compost or manure, handle seedlings carefully, position them upright at ground level, and refill the soil firmly to encourage strong root development and healthy growth.
