Welcome to this session on coffee seedling preparation. Good coffee production begins with healthy, well-prepared seedlings, which can remain productive for many years and contribute significantly to farmers’ income and national economic growth. Seed germination is carried out during favorable seasonal conditions to support strong early development. Farmers should use certified, high-quality seeds sourced from reliable institutions to ensure uniformity and vigor. Seeds are sown in clean, well-drained sand, preferably river sand, which supports straight root development and healthy shoots. Fertilizer is not required at this stage, and the sand should be sun-dried beforehand to eliminate insects and harmful microorganisms.

Seedlings remain in shaded germination beds for several months before being transferred to nurseries. In the nursery, they are planted in pots filled with fertile soil mixed with manure and carefully maintained through regular watering, weeding, and pest management. Coffee seeds are prepared by RAB and distributed to farmers through coffee washing stations to ensure quality control and consistency.
