Topic 4: Shade Management

Video

Welcome to this session on shade management. Shade plays a vital role in sustainable coffee farming. While coffee requires sunlight for growth, excessive direct exposure can cause stress, leading to high leaf and soil temperatures, rapid moisture loss, and wind damage. Stressed trees often produce lower yields, poorer quality coffee, and become more vulnerable to pests and diseases. A well-managed shade system helps create a stable microclimate, allowing coffee plants to use soil, water, and light more efficiently while reducing temperature extremes and conserving moisture.

Not all trees are suitable for shade. A good shade tree provides moderate, filtered light, improves soil fertility through organic matter, has deep roots that do not compete heavily with coffee, and is easy to prune and manage. Properly selected and maintained shade trees support long-term productivity and resilience. Species such as Polyscias, Acacia, and Albizia are commonly used because they provide appropriate shade while contributing to overall plantation health.
